49 points is not a close year. It is a lost year.

The pension is not a vibe and it is not the calendar year. A qualifying Reserve or Guard year is your anniversary year — the AYE that started when you entered active status — with at least 50 retirement points inside it. Miss that number and the year does not count toward the 20. Extra points in a fat year do not buy you a second qualifying year.

Membership is 15 points for being on the books. A drill weekend is 4. Twelve clean weekends is 48. Annual training should put you well over 50. The way people lose a year is stacked unexcused absences in the same anniversary window, then finding out after the AYE closed.

What you do this week

Pull the points inquiry. Army Reserve: IPPS-A. Guard: state RPAM / G-1. Other components: the official points report, not a tracker a battle buddy built in Excel. If a weekend or an AT is missing, file the correction PAR while the witnesses still remember.

If you already know a drill is going to die, RST it before the weekend. Correspondence courses will not save a short year the way people think they will. Twenty good years is the gate. The points also set the paycheck later — but eligibility is the 50-point years, not the lifetime pile.
