The certifying official is not your monthly button
The school certifies the term. You verify the month. Post-9/11 GI Bill and several other education benefits ask you to confirm credit hours and dates after the month ends. Text is an option if you opted in. The website is the backup that always works: VA.gov verify school enrollment, same Login.gov or ID.me you should already have.
VA’s own FAQ: skip two consecutive months on Post-9/11 and monthly payments pause. Montgomery GI Bill does not send that month if you never verify. That is not a new “gotcha tax.” It is the verification rule. A commercial headline that says “what changed in 2026” still sends you to the same .gov button.
If the hours are wrong
Do not invent a number to keep the deposit. Call the School Certifying Official and have them fix the certification. Then verify the truth. Comparison Tool if you do not know who the SCO is.
