Lock a qualifying retirement year

You need 20 years with at least 50 retirement points each. The year is your anniversary year, not the calendar year. 49 points is a lost year, not a close call.

  1. 01

Find your Anniversary Year Ending date

Your retirement year starts on the anniversary of entering active status, not 1 January and not the fiscal year. In the Army Reserve, pull the record in IPPS-A and find the AYE. Guard Soldiers usually confirm through the state RPAM / G-1. If you do not know the date, you cannot defend the year.

  2. 02

Count from the 15 membership points

Ready Reserve membership is 15 points automatic. You still need 35 more to hit 50. A standard drill weekend is 4 points. Twelve clean weekends is 48. Add annual training and you should be well over 50 — unless you have unexcused absences stacked in the same anniversary year.

  3. 03

RST early. Do not donate a year.

If civilian work or family will kill a drill, request rescheduled training before the weekend, not after the AYE closes. A 49-point year does not count toward the 20. Extra points in a 90-point year do not create a second qualifying year.

  4. 04

Audit DA Form 5016 / the points inquiry

Army Reserve: IPPS-A retirement-points PAR if the 5016 is wrong. Do not wait for a 20-year letter to discover a missing AT. Other components: your service's official points report (vMPF, MOL, NSIPS/BOL), not a spreadsheet in a group chat.
