Community care and travel pay.
VA health enrollment is the first door. Community care is when VA cannot see you in time or nearby and sends you to a community provider. Travel pay is mileage / meals for eligible appointments — you file it, they do not guess.
- Enroll in VA health care first (10-10EZ).
- Ask the VA facility about community-care eligibility before you book a civilian specialist out of pocket.
- Travel reimbursement is its own filing on VA.gov (BTSSS). Keep the appointment proof. The checker is on this same page.
- Urgent care in the VA network has rules. Random ER is not automatically community care.

- Special mode (ambulance, wheelchair van) has extra rules. Call the facility travel office.
- A text that wants a gift card to “release mileage” is a scam.
