After a death. Four offices. None of them files the others.

SGLI, SBP or RCSBP, DIC, and burial. Then school money and the surviving-spouse home loan if they apply. The casualty office does not sign them for you.

If the sponsor is alive, use the family card.

  1. Keys

    Do now

The survivor needs their own Login.gov

Do not use the veteran’s inbox. DIC, CHAMPVA, and education will ask for a key that is yours.

  2. Finance

    Do now

Four checks. File the one you actually have.

SGLI is the beneficiary’s claim, SGLV 8283. SBP or RCSBP is DFAS, and only if it was elected. DIC is VA Form 21P-534EZ, or 21P-534a if they died on active duty. Burial is a fourth door.

  3. Housing

Burial allowance is not the insurance claim

The flag, the headstone, the allowance, and a national cemetery are on the VA burials page. A funeral home does not have to file them. Accrued benefits the veteran was due have a one-year clock.

  4. Healthcare

    This month

CHAMPVA if you qualify and you do not have TRICARE

CHAMPVA can cover a surviving spouse or child when the death was service-connected, or the veteran was permanent and total. If you still have TRICARE, CHAMPVA is usually not the door. The form is 10-10d.

  5. Education

    This month

Fry Scholarship or DEA. Not both for the same term.

Fry can pay school after a line-of-duty death on or after September 11, 2001, or a service-connected death. DEA Chapter 35 is the other dependent benefit. The child or spouse applies. The Comparison Tool comes first.

  6. Housing

    When you need it

    Surviving spouse home loan

A surviving spouse on DIC, or the spouse of a service member who died on duty, may use the VA home loan. The door is the surviving-spouse page, not the veteran’s old COE.
